The Details
What you need
If you are applying for a Mass ID, you have the option of choosing a REAL ID.
Beginning May 7, 2025, individuals 18 and older will need a REAL ID driver’s license or ID card (or another ID accepted by the TSA) to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities.
A Massachusetts REAL ID has a star in the top right corner. A standard driver's license does not.
Visit REAL ID in Massachusetts for more information.
To get a Massachusetts identification card (Mass ID) you must:
- Be at least 14 years old
- Not hold a valid license in Massachusetts or another state/jurisdiction
- Be a resident of Massachusetts
You must bring your required identification documents and completed application to an RMV Service Center.
You can start the application online.
Fees
*Mass IDs can be issued for fewer than 5 years, depending on the duration of an applicant’s lawful presence in the U.S. In this case, the fee will be prorated based on how long the Mass ID is valid. The cost will be $5 per year.
Name | Fee | Unit |
