Eligibility: This is a departmental promotional examination. Please refer to the examination poster/application for specific information.

1YP: 1 Year Prior Experience

Deputy Fire Chief (1YP)
The examination weights are 44% Technical Knowledge, 36% Situational Judgment Test, and 20% Experience/Certification/Training & Education (ECT&E).

Eligible Title: Fire Lieutenant
City/Town: Andover

Eligible Title: Fire Captain
City/Town: Brockton, Cambridge, Fall River, Haverhill, Malden, Newton, Randolph

Eligible Title: District Fire Chief
City/Town: Fall River, New Bedford

Deputy Fire Chief (1YP-442)
The examination weights are 44% Technical Knowledge, 36% Situational Judgment Test, and 20% Experience/Certification/Training & Education (ECT&E).

Eligible Title: Fire Lieutenant
City/Town: Ware

Eligible Title: Fire Captain
City/Town: Natick

District Fire Chief (1YP) 
The examination weights are: 48% Technical Knowledge, 32% Situational Judgment and 20% Experience/Certification/Training & Education (ECT&E).

City/Town: Lynn, New Bedford

  3. Notice to Appear for Examination: October 31, 2025

    Two weeks before the examination date you will receive a notice to appear by email. The notice will tell you the location and the time to appear for your examination. Please check your junk or spam mail folder for the email before contacting this office.
  4. Examination Date: November 15, 2025

    Promotional examination candidates are required to file their ECT&E Claims; It is an exam component and will result in a failing score for the ECT&E component if the claim is not completed.  Supporting documentation will be accepted up to 7 calendar days following the examination date by email: civilservice@mass.gov
  5. Score Release Date:  TBD
    Your examination result will be emailed.
  6. Experience/Certification/Training & Education (ECT&E) Last Day to Appeal: TBD
    Before filing an appeal regarding your ECT&E claim, please ensure that your submitted documentation supports the information referenced on your ECT&E claim.
  7. Eligible List Establishment Date: TBD
