Board of Registration in Midwifery Policy 2025-01 Controlled Substances Approved for Use by Licensed Certified Professional Midwives Holding a Temporary LCPM License

In accordance with M.G.L. c. 112, § 295(a), Licensed Certified Professional Midwives (LCPMs) may purchase, possess, prescribe and administer those controlled substances designated by the Board of Registration in Midwifery (Board) as consistent with the scope of midwifery practice by LCPMs.

A Licensed Certified Professional Midwife wishing to work with the controlled substances designated by the Board must apply for and receive a Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration (MCSR) which will authorize them to work with those controlled substances designated by the Board. 

At the Board meeting which took place on June 26, 2025, the Board designated the following controlled substances as consistent with the scope of midwifery practice and approved them for use by LCPMs who hold a temporary LCPM license and a current MCSR.

  • Pre-conception, Antenatal, and well-person sexual and reproductive health care
  • Short acting contraceptives
  • Anti-fungal medications (e.g., metronidazole; fluconazole) 
  • Vaccine: MMR (measles/mumps/rubella)
  • Vaccine: Td/Tdap (tetanus/diptheria/acellular pertussis) Vaccine: Influenza
  • Vaccine: RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) 
  • Vaccine: COVID-19
  • Vaccine: HPV (human papilloma virus) 
  • Vaccine: Hepatitis B
  • Sperm washing medium
  • Anti-virals for HSV (e.g., *Acyclovir, *Valcyclovir) 
  • Rho(D) immune globulin (RhIg) 
  • Anti-emetics (e.g., ondansetron; metrocloprimide)
  • Intrapartum and postpartum
  • Antibiotics in oral, IM and IV suspension formats (e.g., Ampicillin; Azithromycin; Cefazolin; Clindamycin; Penicillin)
  • Lactated Ringer’s
  • Lactated Ringer’s and Dextrose Sodium chloride (normal saline) Medical Oxygen
  • Nitrous Oxide
  • Opioid reversal agents (e.g., Narcan®) 
  • Epinephrine – neonatal and adult formulations 
  • Methylergonovine maleate (e.g., Methergine®) 
  • Misoprostol
  • Synthetic oxytocin (e.g., Pitocin®) Tranexamic acid
  • Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment Vitamin K (phytonadione)
