The civil commitment process for individuals who are involuntary admitted to a hospital due to imminent risk of harm to self or others by reason of mental illness was significantly modified by Chapter 249 of the Acts of 2000. This law took effect November 2000 and changed the procedures for emergency psychiatric hospitalization under M.G.L. Chapter 123. State law required the Department of Mental Health to file this report annually with the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse and the House and Senate Committees on Ways and Means. This reporting requirement was repealed pursuant to Section 128 of Chapter 46 of the Acts of 2015.
