DFS has public awareness campaigns to promote fire and life safety. Each campaign has a toolkit for fire and life safety educators. The campaigns cover important fire safety issues. They can help people learn to keep themselves and their families safe from fire. Educators must communicate consistent and accurate messages about fire safety. The campaign materials help to do this.
New Smoke Alarm PSAs for Older Adults
DFS has new PSAs about the importance of working smoke alarms. The English and Spanishspots are geared to older adults. Older adults are at increased risk of dying in a fire. People aged 65 or over represent 17% of the Massachusetts population but about 50% of last year’s fatal fire victims.
The PSAs feature a granddaughter writing to her grandmother about all she loves in their relationship. The spots have messages about the importance of working smoke alarms and messages about making new memories.
The PSA is available in 15- and 30-second versions. You can view, download, or link to them here or from the DFS YouTube channel (youtube.com/DFSOSFM).
Keep Warm, Keep Safe Winter Home Heating Campaign
The Keep Warm, Keep Safe winter home heating campaign started in 2008. Since then, home heating fires have dropped 50%. But heating is still a major cause of home fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. The Keep Warm, Keep Safe campaign addresses:
- having licensed professionals clean and inspect furnaces and chimneys to prevent problems,
- installing and maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide alarms,
- and using heating equipment safely.
Our tool kit has materials for fire departments and life safety educators.
Cooking Fire Safety Campaign
Cooking is the #1 cause of fires and related in injuries in the home. This campaign features two key messages:
1. Prevent cooking fires by staying in the kitchen when cooking, or "Stand By Your Pan."
2. The best way to put out a stove-top fire is to "Put A Lid On It."
The campaign features two fire house chefs. They share their favorite recipes and cooking fire safety tips. There is a tool kit for fire departments and life safety educators.
Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With
Most people know they need working smoke alarms. But many don’t know that smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years. This campaign reminds the public that smoke alarms don't last forever. Having working smoke alarms on every level of a home is vital. Missing or disabled smoke alarms contribute to too many fire deaths. "Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With," is our campaign theme. The campaign has a toolkit for fire departments and fire educators.
Breathe Easy: Home Oxygen Fire Safety Campaign
Many people bring medical oxygen into their homes. But many do not understand the unique fire risks that home oxygen poses. Physicians and other caregivers can educate patients about the safe use of oxygen. DFS has resources for patients, physicians, families, firefighters and other caregivers. The resources help to educate people about the fire safety risks of medical oxygen in the home. The resources also cover how to use it safely.
