Tips for Opening or Closing a Business

Running a business in the Commonwealth is a major decision. We have resources to make sure you are on the right track. Closing a business also has specific steps that must be taken to notify DOR that you are no longer in operation.  

Get Familiar with Sales and Use Tax

For questions about what is and isn't subject to sales and use tax in Massachusetts, the Sales and Use Tax for Individuals page is your one-stop shop. Connect to the various taxpayer guides that explore taxes on motor vehicles, meals tax, taxes on boats and recreational vehicles, and individual use tax. 

Frequently Asked Question: How Do I Pay Motor Vehicle Excise?

Although Motor Vehicle Excise is generally billed by and paid directly to your city or town, we are frequently asked for information. The Motor Vehicle Excise Guide can help answer questions about taxes and vehicles, including the tax rate, how it is calculated, and penalties for non-payment to name a few. Specific questions can be directed to your city hall or town tax collector where the bill is issued.

Circuit Breaker Credit 101

Some seniors who rent or own a property in Massachusetts as their principal residence are eligible for the Senior Circuit Breaker tax credit. Taxpayers who are at least 65 years of age may be able to take advantage of this credit. Visit the circuit breaker information page to learn if you are eligible. Brownfields Credit and Film Credit Applications Must Now Be Submitted Online

All Brownfields and Film credit applications mustbe submitted on MassTaxConnect. This will be required starting September 1, 2024. The applicant will log in to their MassTaxConnect account to complete the application and upload documents. For those without an account, the application can be submitted on MassTaxConnect by choosing Submit Credit Application under File on the homepage.
