About COVID-19 Tests

Self-tests are widely available.

There are two types of COVID-19 tests

  • Self-tests (usually rapid antigen tests), and
  • PCR tests

You can take rapid antigen self-tests, also called at-home tests and/or Over the Counter (OTC) tests, at home or anywhere. They are easy to use, give you rapid results, and are an acceptable alternative to a PCR test in most situations. Self-tests are widely available.

A single, negative self-test result does not rule out infection. Please follow directions on the packaging and product insert regarding “serial” testing (repeat a self-test at least 48 hours after the first one is best to detect an infection, especially if a person is experiencing no symptoms).

If you are unsure whether an at-home COVID-19 test kit has expired, check the Expiration Date column of the FDA list of Authorized At-Home OTC COVID-19 Diagnostic Tests to see if the expiration date has been extended and how to find any new expiration date.

COVID-19 testing location search

Use this search tool to look for PCR tests. A PCR test is a clinically administered test, where a swab of your nose, throat, or a saliva sample is taken and then sent to a lab. Results for a PCR test can take several days to come back. PCR tests are the most reliable test in detecting infection for people with no symptoms, but should not be used if you have had a COVID-19 infection in the last 90 days.
