Our programs aim to eliminate practices, policies and processes that impede our ability to be a diverse and inclusive employer of choice.

Table of Contents

Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)

The Commonwealth provides equal opportunity in state employment to all persons.  No person shall be denied equal access because of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, or physical/mental disability.

The Commonwealth applies affirmative action measures to correct deficiencies in the state employment system where those remedies are appropriate.  The policy shall be interpreted broadly to achieve its purposes.  Executive Order 592 and the Mass General Laws c 151B, §4.1 prohibits discrimination on the basis of protected status.

Affirmative Action Programs (AA)

In accordance with Executive Order 592 and applicable federal laws, the Commonwealth promotes affirmative action in employment.  We are committed to identifying areas of underrepresentation and working with Executive Departments to develop strategies that will remedy underrepresentation and/or demonstrate "good faith" efforts toward a remedy.  We incorporate metrics and analytics to monitor our progress.  Would you like to know your county's benchmark numbers?  If so, click on the Massachusetts Census 2020 Employment by State and Local Occupational Groups link.

What is Diversity?

Diversity is defined as valuing the differences among the Commonwealth's employees and all those with whom we do business.  These differences include but are not limited to race, gender, gender identity or expression, color national origin and ancestry, religion, age, mental/physical disability, sex, sexual orientation, veteran's status, organizational level, economic status, geographical origin, marital status, communication and learning styles, and other characteristics and traits; and developing an inclusive environment that capitalizes on each individual's talents, skills and perspectives in order to increase organizational productivity and effectiveness.

What is Inclusion?

Inclusion is defined as the act of creating environments in which any individual group can feel welcomed, respected, supported and valued.  Bringing together, harnessing and leveraging our diversity to benefit the Commonwealth.  Inclusion puts the concept and practice of diversity into ACTION!

What is Equity?

Equity is being fair and impartial.  Providing what each individual or group needs, so they can experience fair and equitable treatment.
