QCML Criteria for Concrete Block (M4.05.1) and Clay Brick (M4.05.2)

This criteria was qualified by MassDOT as of the date posted: June 15, 2026

Concrete Block and Clay Brick Manufacturers shall meet the criteria of the product’s specifications sheet, Technical Data Sheet (TDS), and Safety Data Sheet (SDS), meet the requirements specified in M4.05.1 & M4.05.2, and maintain qualification on the QCML. 

Material Properties

Reinforced Concrete Block must meet the requirements of Subsection M4.05.1 as well as the following material properties:

  • ASTM C139
  • ASTM C140

Clay Brick must meet the requirements of Subsection M4.05.2 as well as the following material properties:

  • ASTM C67
  • ASTM C32

Submittal and Testing Requirements

MassDOT Testing Requirements:

The following criteria must be met for Concrete Block and Clay Brick products, as part of the product submission:

  • Clay Brick must meet specification M4.05.2, meet the material requirements of ASTM C32 and be sampled and testing in accordance with ASTM C67
  • Concrete Masonry Units (Block) must meet specification M4.05.1, meet the material requirements of ASTM C139 and be sampled and testing in accordance with ASTM C140

QCML Listing, Expiration, and Re-Qualification

The Concrete Block and Clay Brick will be listed on the MassDOT QCML. The manufacturer shall be re-qualified on an annual basis. The product shall remain on the qualified list unless one of the following occurs:

  • If the product’s technology changes.
    • If the product formulation or technology changes, the Manufacturer shall notify MassDOT RMS.
  • MassDOT RMS determines that the product no longer meets the minimum requirements.

A written request for re-qualification must be submitted to the Department at least 60 days prior to the expiration date to remain on the QCML.
