Material Properties
Grout must meet the requirements of Subsection M4.04.0 as well as the following properties:
- Non-shrink grout (M4.04.5) must meet ASTM C1107, and the testing outlined within
- Grout products for unit masonry (M4.04.4) must meet ASTM C476, and the testing outlined within
Submittal and Testing Requirements
A manufacturer requesting approval of Grouts shall furnish to MassDOT RMS the following:
- If required, the material specifications and performance data for their product as specified under the MassDOT Testing Requirements section shown below.
- Grout products must meet the additional independent testing requirements as specified by the Independent Testing Requirements shown below.
All submittals shall be certified to be in conformance with the manufacturer's instructions. Grouts qualified by MassDOT per the performance criteria shall be considered for placement on the MassDOT QCML.
MassDOT Testing Requirements:
The following criteria must be met for grout products, as part of the product submission:
- The manufacturer must certify that the product is in accordance with M4.04.0.
- Grout Products for unit masonry must certify that it is in compliance with M4.04.4
- Non-shrink grout must certify that it is in compliance with M4.04.5
- Must meet the requirements and performance criteria of the product’s technical data sheet (TDS)
- Grout products shall be defined as the products containing aggregate of which less than 5% by mass of the total mixture is retained on the 3/8 in. sieve.
- The aggregate included in the prepacked product or extended into the product shall meet M4.01.2: Aggregate.
- Products extended with aggregate not included in the original product packaging shall meet the verification sampling and testing requirements specified in M4.06.0: Cement Concrete.
Independent Testing Requirements:
All submitted independent test results shall meet the following requirements:
- The Certified independent test reports submitted must demonstrate conformance to M4.04.0 and ASTM
- The Independent Lab must be recognized by the National Cooperation for Laboratory Accreditation (NACLA) in Construction Materials Engineering and Testing (CMET) or an equal program approved by Research and Materials.
- All testing shall be performed by one Independent Lab unless approved by the Engineer.
- Independent Test Reports must be dated within 2 years from the initial submission
- Samples for all required testing shall be fabricated at the same time. Test reports shall denote the lot of material as well as the sample fabrication and testing dates.
Product Listing, Expiration, and Re-Approval
Once approved, the Grouts product will be listed on the MassDOT QCML. The product shall remain on the approved list for five (5) years unless one of the following occurs:
- MassDOT RMS determines that the Manufacturer or their products no longer meet the minimum requirements of the Standard Specifications.
A written request for re-approval must be submitted to the Department at least 60 days prior to the expiration date for the product to remain on the QCML. The manufacturer will be required to submit certified test reports demonstrating conformance to the specification.
