This quick start guide will help you navigate the dashboard and find the capacity data of the chosen hospital near you.

Find average number of licensed inpatient beds

Steps to find out the average number of licensed inpatient beds at your chosen hospital:

  1. On the dashboard home page, under "Choose a hospital", choose or type the name of the hospital to begin a search.
  2. Your chosen hospital and other hospitals within a 30-minute drive will show on the screen.
  3. Use the "Explore more data on hospital beds" button to go to the next page.
  4. Filter the data by:
    • Selecting a bed type:
      • Adult Medical/Surgical
      • Adult ICU
      • Pediatric
      • Pediatric ICU
    • Choosing to include surge beds or not:
      • Surge beds not included
      • Surge beds included
  5. The average number of beds at your chosen hospital will show on the graph. You can interact with the graph to access a breakdown of beds by type and by month.
  6. You can also learn about the average daily occupied beds for the selected bed type by month with year over year change:
    • Select the months in the "show months of" dropdown menu
    • The filtered results will show on the screen. Interact with the graph and the map for details

Find emergency ambulance trip volume

Steps to find emergency ambulance trip volume by hospital: 

  1. On the dashboard home page, use the "Choose a hospital" dropdown to select the name of a  hospital to begin a search.
  2. Your chosen hospital will appear in the map along with the nearby towns where the emergency ambulance trips originated. 
  3. You will see a line graph next to the map showing the number of emergency ambulance trips to the selected hospital by month. 
    1. You can select specific months to visualize using the “Show the months of” dropdown next to the line graph.
  4. Below the map and line graph, you will see a stacked bar chart showing the count or percent of all emergency ambulance trips to the selected hospital by town.  You can use the “Show months of” dropdown to visualize specific months and the “Choose number or percent dropdown” to visualize the count data as a count or a percent. 

Steps to find emergency ambulance trip volume by town: 

  1. On the dashboard home page, click the “Switch to explore by town” button in the menus along the top of the screen. 
  2. Use the "Choose a city or town" dropdown to select the name of a town to begin a search.
  3. Your chosen town will appear in the map along with the nearby destination hospitals for emergency ambulance trips.
  4. You will see a line graph next to the map showing the number of emergency ambulance trips from the selected town by month. 
    1. You can select specific months to visualize using the “Show the months of” dropdown next to the line graph.
  5. Below the map and line graph, you will see a stacked bar chart showing the count or percent of all emergency ambulance trips by hospital destination from the selected town.  You can use the “Show months of” dropdown to visualize specific months and the “Choose number or percent dropdown” to visualize the count data as a count or a percent. 

Find nursing homes within a 30-minute drive time of your chosen hospital

Steps to find out nursing homes within a 30-minute drive time of your chosen hospital: 

  1. On the dashboard home page, under "Choose a hospital", choose or type the name of the hospital to begin a search.
  2. Your chosen hospital and other hospitals within a 30-minute drive will show on the screen.  
  3. You may filter the data by nursing home, by CMS star rating, and select one of the following metrics to display:
    • Average occupancy rate
    • Average residents per day
    • Average nursing hours (average nursing care provided by CNA, LPN, and RN staff)
    • Average RN hours (average nursing care provided by licensed RNs)
    • Average CNA hours (average nursing care provided by certified nurse aides)
  4. The result will show on the screen. Interact with the graph to get the details.

Find the average number of emergency department visits

To find out the average number of emergency department visits at your chosen hospital:

  1. On the dashboard home page, under "Choose a hospital", choose or type the name of the hospital to begin a search.
  2. Your chosen hospital and other hospitals within a 30-minute drive will show on the screen.
  3. Use the "Explore more data on emergency departments" button to go to the next page.
  4. Filter the data by month and select one of the following metrics:
    • Total number of visits
    • Percent of visits that discontinued care
    • Average length of stay
  5. The result will show on the screen. Interact with the graph to get the details.
  6. To generate data for a year over year comparison, check the applicable month(s) from the "show months of" dropdown menu.
