Employee impact information
1. How is the Commonwealth supporting employees of Carney and Nashoba Valley who are impacted by the closures?
For those employees who have been directly affected by the closure of Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center, the Commonwealth has been helping to identify opportunities for them to continue working at the many hospitals, nursing homes, community health centers, and other health care organizations around the state that are looking for talented colleagues. The health care industry for the past few years has experienced a shortage of many different categories of health care workers, and there are many open positions in a wide range of health care and related organizations. Changing jobs can be stressful, emotional, and challenging, and we hope that all those displaced by the Steward hospital closures will be interested in filling these important jobs in other organizations where they can continue to serve Massachusetts patients and communities.
The Commonwealth has been meeting with organized labor representatives and members of the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development (EOLWD) to facilitate as smooth and efficient a transition as possible for impacted employees. There will be resources available for those employees who will want and need to secure other jobs.
2. What kinds of resources does the Commonwealth offer to employees who are affected by these hospital closures?
The Commonwealth – through the EOLWD -- offers many tools to assist with a transition to the next opportunity, including career services, job placement support, and financial assistance programs. These resources are designed to help employees navigate this challenging time and find new opportunities. These free transition resources are available at MassHire career centers located across the state.
