Steward Health Care: Transition to the new operators

This page provides updates regarding the transition.

Steward Health Care in May 2024 announced its plans to sell its hospitals in Massachusetts. Five of these hospitals received qualified bids, and transitioned to the new operators October 31. Two of Steward’s Massachusetts hospitals, Carney Hospital in Dorchester and Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer closed August 31. The five hospitals that are open and operating under new ownership  are: St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton and Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, which are now part of Boston Medical Center; Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River and Morton Hospital in Taunton are now part of Rhode Island-based Brown University Health (formerly Lifespan); and Holy Family Hospital with campuses in Methuen and Haverhill has been integrated into Lawrence General Hospital.

During Steward’s bankruptcy process, Boston Medical had submitted a bid for St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, which Steward accepted. That bid, however, was not accepted by the asset management company, Apollo, which controls the property.  The Commonwealth took the St. Elizabeth’s property by eminent domain and turned the hospital over to Boston Medical Center to continue delivering uninterrupted care to patients of the hospital.

Transition information

Steward also owns Norwood Hospital, which has been closed since June 2020, when a major storm caused catastrophic flooding throughout the facility. Construction of a new facility has been suspended for months because of Steward’s financial problems. Norwood Hospital was not included among the hospitals for sale as part of Steward’s bankruptcy filing.

Norwood’s license expired Nov. 5, 2024. Even though Norwood Hospital had not been open, four outpatient clinics that have operated under the Norwood license had remained open and had continued to provide care to patients.

In October, Norwood gave notice to DPH of its intention to close Norwood Hospital and the associated outpatient clinics. This notice triggered a closure process, which included a public hearing.

Brown University Health (formerly Lifespan) under the license of Morton Hospital received approval to assume the operations of the two outpatient satellites located in Foxborough, including an oncology center.  These two outpatient programs continue to provide care and services to patients now under the names Brown University Health Cancer Institute in Foxborough and Brown University Health Care Center in Foxborough.
