Resources for patients and employees of Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center

On July 26, 2024, Steward Health Care announced its plans to close two of its Massachusetts hospitals — Carney Hospital in Dorchester and Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer. Both hospitals closed August 31, 2024.

The state is working closely with hospital, health center, and emergency medical services leadership to support patients, communities, and employees affected by the closures, and maintain access to safe care across Massachusetts.

Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center closed August 31, 2024. As part of the state’s closure process, hospitals are required to submit a closure plan detailing how the essential medical services will continue to be available to the public.

The state has created a dedicated Steward Health Care call center at (617) 468-2189, or toll-free at (833) 305-2070. The call center is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.–6 p.m. E.T. (excluding Massachusetts holidays).

I am a patient

Both Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center closed August 31, 2024. Patients who had received care or visited providers at those facilities should be in touch directly with their providers to make any adjustments  or changes. In addition, patients  may want to contact their insurance companies to make sure they understand how any provider changes may affect coverage.

Steward has provided a plan and timeline for closures. Information about where and how patients can continue to access care and services has been submitted by Steward, and DPH has reviewed to the plan and has asked for additional information and details. Check the Patients FAQS for information such as medical records, renewing prescriptions, and finding closest urgent care centers.

I am an employee

The MassHire Rapid Response team worked with Steward, Massachusetts Nursing Association, SEIU 1199, and other health care providers to help with employment transitions for employees. Questions from employees may be directed to Rapid Response Coordinators for employees: Chuck Bennet (Carney Hospital) at (617) 620-4695 or Sandra Foley (Nashoba Valley) at (617) 438-7894.

Public hearings and additional resources

In accordance with the state’s hospital closure process, public hearings were held for patients, employees, the community, and other interested parties to express their concerns and make comments about the closures. Each hospital had an in-person meeting in the community, and a virtual meeting.
