Transportation During the World Cup

As many fans travel to experience the excitement, transportation will play a critical role in keeping our cities and towns moving safely and efficiently.

MassDOT is working with state and local partners to make sure residents and visitors are able to travel around the state safely and smoothly.

What to expect

Kick the drive road sign

With large crowds expected for the World Cup, MassDOT is encouraging travelers to “Kick the Drive” and take public transit to and from Boston Stadium in Foxborough. Parking in Foxborough will be by pre-paid reservation only and is extremely limited.

The City of Boston will also be the site for fan parades and host Fan Fest at City Hall Plaza. Public transit is highly recommended for travel in and around Boston during the tournament.

If you’re not attending events at Boston Stadium or City Hall Plaza

On match days, travelers who aren’t attending events may want to consider alternate travel routes or work remotely if that’s an option. Drivers should expect heavier than usual traffic and allow extra time, as tournament activities will affect normal travel patterns. Most matches will take place in the afternoon and overlap with evening commuting hours. The full schedule is available here.

The MBTA is also highly recommended for travel to and from fan events and parades that will be held in the City of Boston during the tournament.

Traveling around the City of Boston

For travel to and within the City of Boston during the tournament, public transportation including the Commuter Rail, T, and bus services is advised. More information about available MBTA services: MBTA World Cup Boston Information.

Driving to and from Boston Stadium

Road travel to and from the World Cup is expected to be different than other stadium events throughout the year. Many drivers will be unfamiliar with the area and matches will impact evening commutes.

For those who choose to drive, plan for significantly longer travel times.

  • Traffic patterns on Route 1 near the stadium may be redirected to manage event-related flow.
  • For those coming from Boston, please use I-93 South (Expressway) to I-95 South to Route 1. For those coming from north of Boston please use I-95 South.
  • For those coming from the west please use I-90 East to I-495 South to Route 1 North.
  • For those coming from Providence, please use I-95 North to I-495 North to Route 1 North.

Drivers should anticipate slowdowns and delays on both northbound and southbound I-495 near Exit 32 due to stadium traffic. Congestion may include backups in the right lane for vehicles exiting toward the stadium. Travelers not attending the event are encouraged to allow extra travel time or consider alternate routes and may wish to avoid the Route 1 corridor in the stadium area.

There will be more updates coming for those who may be traveling from Southeastern Massachusetts.

Parking

Parking in Foxborough will be limited and restricted to match ticket holders.

Parking will be available by pre-paid reservation only and will require that drivers present a ticket to the match for that day to enter the lot. Non-ticket holders will be turned away. This includes all private lots in the area of the stadium, and entrance to all stadium parking which is also by pre-paid, reserved ticket only.
