For more than a decade, the Commonwealth has supported urban agriculture producers with grant funding, technical assistance and state-wide conferences. Over $3.5 million has been invested in urban agriculture through MDAR’s Urban Agriculture Program. In total, 115 projects have been funded in 7 counties across the commonwealth for projects that increase access to fresh nutritious food, marketing, distribution and building productive green spaces in our state’s densely populated communities.

We will also be celebrating HIP (as organized by the MA Food System Collaborative), as that has been important to both the farm, and our work in Lynn in general. The Farm is a beautiful production space that is intensively grown by Food Project farmers and the Youth team.

Boston Medical Center Rooftop Farms has two farm sites on the rooftops of the hospital system. The farms are part of our Nourishing Our Community initiative, born from BMC’s Preventive Food Pantry, the first hospital-based therapeutic pantry in the country. We also house a Teaching Kitchen where dietitians and nutritionists lead hands-on cooking classes. Our produce supports these programs and goes to the hospital kitchens, our summer farmers market, and Rosie’s Place, a women’s shelter around the corner. Together, our two rooftops produce about 10,000 pounds of food each year on less than a quarter acre. Power Plant Farm opened nine years ago, and Newmarket Farm, featured here, is in its third season.We grow over 40 varieties of organic crops from the staples like peppers, kale, and carrots, to culturally significant crops like callaloo, Malabar spinach, Tulsi, aji dulce peppers, and cranberry beans. In addition to growing food, we grow engagement and food systems education. We lead Gardening 101 workshops, K–12 camps, volunteer days, and patient programming on a variety of topics from seed to plate. Springfield’s young farmers celebrate the August Harvest and launch the Step for SNAP campaign. Neighbors come and join us in a ;66&meal made from the summer’s harvest. While we gather, our young people will unveil the STEP for SNAP Campaign and invite other young people to join us in “stepping up for SNAP” asking Congress to repeal the planned SNAP cuts.

The Food Project will focus our Urban Agriculture Week activities this year at the DSNI multicultural festival! We hope this will help us connect with neighbors that might not know about the farm, and will emphasize that The Food Project's Boston farms belong to the community- in that they are on the community land trust. This is your farm! Here is an opportunity to enjoy it through hands-on activities using plants grown on the farm! In partnership with our Urban Agriculture ambassador Memia McAllister, we will host both a bouquet making and tea blending activities with flowers and herbs preserved from the Boston farms. While participants create bouquets and/or tea blends to take home, Memia and I will connect with them to talk about our farm, the markets, the build-a-garden program and Memia's workshops and home services to growers.
