If Stavros can’t complete the repair, they will connect you with a wheelchair provider who can.

Get your back-up manual or power wheelchair repaired

You may be able to get repairs for your manual wheelchair, approved by MassHealth as a back-up to a power wheelchair; or for your back-up power wheelchair.

Repairs to a manual wheelchair approved by MassHealth as a back-up to a power wheelchair can be performed as needed. PA is needed for repairs that cost over $1,000.

Repairs to a back-up power wheelchair can be done if all of the following apply.

  • You can’t use a manual wheelchair or a loaner power wheelchair when your primary chair needs repair.
  • The wheelchair provider doesn’t have a loaner wheelchair available
  • Your chair can be repaired within the following limitations of the program.

Limitations

  • MassHealth will pay for the repair of only one back-up power wheelchair per calendar year.
  • The total cost of the repair of the working back-up power wheelchair can’t be more than $1,000 per year. (MassHealth will review requests over $1,000 on a case-by-case basis).
  • Any repairs to your working backup power wheelchair will need PA.

Contact your wheelchair provider if you need repairs to your back-up manual or power wheelchair.

If you’re enrolled in One Care, Senior Care Options (SCO), the Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), an accountable care organization (ACO), or a managed care organization (MCO), you should contact your plan directly.

Get a loaner chair while your primary wheelchair is being repaired

If your primary wheelchair isn’t usable and needs repairs, wheelchair providers will try to give you a rental/ loaner chair until your repair is completed. Providers may not always have a suitable loaner chair available.

If you live in Worcester, Hampshire, Hampden, Franklin, or Berkshire county, you can also contact Stavros Center for Independent Living at (413) 256-0473, ext. 187 or Wheelchairops@stavros.org for a loaner chair. Through the loaner program, Stavros is providing loaner wheelchairs for MassHealth-eligible residents in these five counties. Stavros will coordinate delivery of a loaner chair to your home if they have one available that meets your needs.

Get maintenance repairs on your primary wheelchair

You can have maintenance repairs done on your primary and backup wheelchairs. Regularly scheduled maintenance repairs can help prevent failure of your wheelchair. Maintenance repairs can be scheduled by a member or wheelchair provider.

You can have maintenance repairs done if

  • the repair is performed by a trained technician; and
  • the timing of the maintenance repair is identified in the manufacturer’s instructions or owner’s manual for your chair.

Get non-emergency transportation (PT-1) to go to a wheelchair provider to get your wheelchair repaired

Wheelchair repairs may be completed more quickly if they can be performed at your wheelchair provider’s service location. You may be able to get non-emergency transportation (PT-1) to your wheelchair provider’s service location for wheelchair repair evaluations and/or wheelchair repairs. Your wheelchair provider can request this for you by submitting a Provider Request for Transportation (PT-1) form.(Please note: not all wheelchair providers are registered to use the PT-1 program.) You can check your eligibility for transportation by calling the MassHealth Customer Service Center at (800) 841-2900.

To use PT-1 transportation to go to a wheelchair provider, all of the following must apply.

  • Your wheelchair must be working well enough to allow you to be safely transported to the wheelchair provider’s service location.
    • If you can’t be safely transported, the wheelchair provider must continue to make home repairs.
  • The evaluation or the repair must be completed on the same day as the transportation.
  • You must have MassHealth Standard, MassHealth CommonHealth, or MassHealth Care Plus coverage to be eligible.

If you’re enrolled in One Care, Senior Care Options (SCO), or the Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), you should contact your plan directly for transportation needs.

Contact your wheelchair provider to find out if they’re participating in the PT-1 program. If they are, then tell them that you need non-emergency transportation for a wheelchair repair evaluation and/or wheelchair repair appointment.

Your MassHealth wheelchair provider must complete the online transportation request (PT-1 form) for you. (There’s  no paper form.) The approval process may take up to 15 days.

If the PT-1 form is approved, you’ll get a letter from your transportation broker, either Montachusett Reginal Transit Authority (MART) or the Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority (GATRA), with instructions on how to schedule your ride. When possible, schedule your ride at least three days in advance.
