The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) introduced the Massachusetts Electric Vehicle Incentive Program (MassEVIP) in 2013 to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and the development of EV charging station infrastructure across the state. The early goal was to help cities and towns acquire EVs and charging stations by offsetting the upfront costs.
MassEVIP accepts applications on a rolling basis to support Level 1 and Level 2 alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) stations up to 36 kilowatts (kW), and support public entity acquisition of EVs up to 10,000 pounds. The MassEVIP program has been funded by a number of sources, including from legal settlements and trusts. MassEVIP programs have disbursed approximately $35 million and supported the deployment of nearly 7,000 EV charging ports as of April 2025.
