Springfield fire investigation

SPRINGFIELD — A man who was transported from an Indian Orchard house fire has died of his injuries, said Springfield Fire Commissioner Bernard J. Calvi, Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence E. Akers, State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine, and Hampden County District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni.

Springfield Fire & Emergency Services responded to 212 Essex Street at about 11:00 this morning after a passerby reported smoke coming from the single-family home. On arrival, they gained entry to locate the fire and found one adult male. Firefighters removed the man from the home and undertook lifesaving efforts before he was transported to an area hospital. The man later passed away and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of his death.

Two children who did not show signs of physical injury were also transported from the scene for evaluation.

The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation by the Springfield Arson & Bomb Squad, Springfield Police, State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and State Police assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s office. They are supported by the Department of Fire Services’ Code Compliance & Enforcement Unit.
