BOSTON — As part of the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) ongoing commitment to provide free and accessible programming for Massachusetts families and residents, the agency announced the start of the annual Free Family Flicks series. The initiative provides free movie screenings at select DCR properties around the state on Tuesdays through Saturdays in July and August.

“DCR’s Free Family Flicks series is a favorite tradition for Massachusetts families, and movie-goers of all ages, providing them with an opportunity to spend a summer evening watching a movie under the stars in some of our beautiful state parks,” said DCR Commissioner Brian Arrigo. “These free and accessible programs are a great way to get nature lovers and first-time explorers into our parks for a safe and fun experience.”

This year’s movie lineup includes Moana 2, Beetlejuice, Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Captain America: Brave New World, and a sing-along screening of Wicked. Screenings are open to the public and will be close captioned with the exception of the Wicked sing-along. To ensure optimal viewing conditions, all films will begin at sundown.

Movies will be shown at DCR properties throughout the week starting Friday, July 11 at:

  • The Hatch Shell on the Charles River in Boston (Fridays)
  • Salisbury Beach in Salisbury (Saturdays in July)
  • Blackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park in Uxbridge (Saturdays in August)
  • Breakheart Reservation in Saugus (Tuesdays in July)
  • Red Rock Park in Lynn (Tuesdays in August)
  • Castle Island in Boston (Wednesdays)
  • Borderland State Park in North Easton (Thursdays in July)
  • Houghton’s Pond in Milton (Thursdays in August)

To accommodate the screenings on Friday nights, July 11 to August 22, at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade, DCR will close the right lane along Storrow Drive from 6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Traffic patterns will be clearly marked, and a police detail will be on site.
