The Division of Ecological Restoration (DER) has released a notice of an upcoming opportunity for dam removal preliminary design services. DER will be seeking applications from Massachusetts municipalities for this opportunity, which will study dams to help landowners and partners assess opportunities and constraints during early planning phases of potential aquatic habitat restoration and climate resilience projects. DER is interested in dam removal projects that are at an early stage of development and/or decision-making. Selected projects will be eligible to receive technical assistance from DER staff and DER-led contracted technical services from qualified vendors.

The DER Dam Removal Program helps to remove unwanted dams, which can alter river function, trap sediment, reduce water quality, and block the movement of fish. To gather critical information about dams for future ecological restoration planning and climate adaptation, DER contracts and manages dam removal preliminary studies.

This is an announcement only. A separate notice will be posted when the opportunity opens. The Request for Responses is anticipated to be issued late summer 2024.
