Both Massachusetts and the federal government can help you pay your rent through “voucher” programs. You can use some vouchers anywhere as long as the unit meets health and safety standards. Other vouchers are for a specific housing unit. There are also programs for emergency financial support if you are in danger of losing your housing.

Rental Assistance: Housing Vouchers

Federal rental vouchers (Section 8) + Section 8 is a federal program where you can apply for help with your rent. Find information here about various Section 8 programs for families dealing with domestic violence, veterans, people living with HIV, and more.

State rental vouchers (MRVP, AHVP) + MRVP offers tenant and project-based assistance for low-income families and individuals. AHVP is for low-income people under 60 with a disability. Apply for both through CHAMP.

Affordable units for rent + Look for affordable rental units across Massachusetts through these providers. They are not associated with private market realtors.

Emergency financial assistance + Residential Assistance for Families in Transition (RAFT) offers short-term help for people who need help with rent, mortgage, utilities, moving costs, or furniture.
