About the Emergency Medical Services for Children Program

The EMSC program is designed to reduce pediatric mortality and morbidity resulting from severe illness or trauma.

Reducing pediatric mortality and morbidity is not single-faceted. The Emergency Medical Services for Children program has continued to be successful due to the tireless efforts and collaborations of partners spanning across different bureaus, divisions, offices, and healthcare sectors.

Advisory Board

The Massachusetts EMS for Children Advisory Board works to expand and improve both the capacity and capabilities of EMS agencies and emergency departments to deliver evidence-based, effective pediatric care aligned with best practice standards. Included on the advisory board are subject matter experts from each of the following agencies and organizations:

  • Massachusetts Department of Public Health
  • Baystate Medical Center
  • Boston Children’s Hospital
  • Boston Medical Center
  • Emergency Nurses’ Association
  • Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians
  • Massachusetts General Hospital
  • Regional EMS offices
  • UMass Medical Center

Family Advisory Network (FAN)

In 1999, the EMSC Program created the Family Advisory Network (FAN) to facilitate the inclusion of family representatives in state EMSC programs. Today, the FAN membership includes family representatives from most states and US territories.

FAN members contribute to their state program activities in numerous ways, including, but not limited to: serving as members, chair, and co-chairs of their state EMSC advisory committee; coordinating special community outreach projects, assisting with the development and implementation of EMSC policy objectives; and helping to plan, present, and promote education offerings within their state. Family representatives are also involved at the national level. Several FAN members sit on the federal ESMC Strategic Planning Committee; others are involved on the EMSC program Meeting Planning Committee.
