DCR is working to to design, permit, and construct an extension of the popular Cape Cod Rail Trail in Wellfleet north of LeCount Hollow Road

Updates on this extension project will be posted on this page as design and construction proceed.

Project Updates

September, 2021: Fencing, Planting and Final Paving

Notice: Trail uses should be aware that we are hoping to reopen the Lecount Hollow Parking Lot in November 2021.

The full Phase 1 Project Plans are available via the link provided below.

DCR’s contractor has recently completed:

• Loaming of shoulders
• Installation of Curbing
• Installation of Traffic signals
• Installation of Safety Rail Fencing
• Concrete flatwork

In the coming weeks, DCR and its contractors intend to:

• Landscaping
• Final Paving of the Trail
• Striping and Pavement Markings
• Installation of Benches, Bike Racks

March 15, 2021: DCR Begins “Phase 1” Construction

DCR has initiated Phase 1 construction of this extension project.  Phase one will extend the trail from the Lecount Hollow Parking Lot and Trailhead to DCR’s Wellfleet Hollow Campground.  DCR will also be doing some site work at the DCR-owned parcel on Route 6 near Oriole Lane.  However, at the request of the Town, DCR will not be constructing the trail from the Campground to Route 6 at this time.

The Lecount Hollow Parking Lot and Trailhead will be closed to the public for the duration of the project.

March 10, 2020 Public Information Meeting

June 13, 2019 Public Meeting

On Thursday June 13, 2019, DCR held a public meeting in Wellfleet to present the preferred alternative design for an extension of the Cape Cod Rail Trail along the former rail corridor running from Lacount Hollow Road to Route 6 near Wellfleet Center.
