CZM Coastal Habitat Program - A Volunteer's Handbook for Monitoring New England Salt Marshes

This Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) publication was developed to help local groups collect and record data on salt marsh health. (Publication Date - 2003)

Salt marshes provide rich habitat to a great diversity of plants, invertebrates, fish, birds, and mammals. They also protect shorelines from storm damage by dispersing wave and tide energy, and help purify water by assimilating potential pollutants.

To help manage these resources at the local level, CZM developed A Volunteer's Handbook for Monitoring New England Salt Marshes (PDF, 5 MB) as a tool to help local groups collect and record data on salt marsh health in a consistent and scientifically sound manner.

To order a hard copy of the handbook, please email czm@state.ma.us with your name and mailing address or call the CZM Information Line at (617) 626-1212.
