As the data in Figure 1 illustrates, pre-trial detention admissions by the courts of the Commonwealth to the Department of Youth Services decreased in 2010 from the prior year. The 182 fewer admissions represents a 6% decrease from 2009. The 2010 detention admission level is 44% lower than the 5,283 admissions in 2001.

The number of new commitments to DYS decreased in 2010 compared to the prior year. As shown in Figure 3, there were 602 new commitments during 2010. This represents a decrease of 5% from 2009. The 2010 new commitment level is 55% lower than the 1,348 commitments in 2001.
All five of the DYS Regions showed decreases in new commitments in 2010 compared to the prior year. The Central Region showed the biggest decrease.
