Fluoroscopy

The Radiation Control Program provides regulations for the operation of fluoroscopic systems.

Fluoroscopy is an x-ray based technique that allows continuous imaging of an instrument, a body part, or a dye as each is used during a diagnostic or treatment procedure. In a fluoroscopy procedure, an x-ray is passed through the body and the images transmitted to a monitor so that movement can be detected and evaluated. Significant levels of ionizing radiation, however, may injure both the patient and the practitioner if safety precautions are not maintained. Image quality and diagnostic utility may also be affected by the capabilities of the professional carrying out the technique.

Regulations and educational requirements

Regulatory revisions to 105 CMR 120.400 X-rays in the Healing Arts established the educational and credentialing requirements necessary for Physician Assistants (PA) to perform fluoroscopic procedures.

The regulations allow PA's to perform fluoroscopic procedures as delegated by their supervising physicians only after completion of rigorous didactic and supervised clinical training. PA's must pass an exam provided by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). These measures will ensure that practicing PA's understand how to accurately and safely utilize fluoroscopy.  The specific RCP regulations are found at 105 CMR 120.405(K).

In addition, regulations developed under the Board of Registration of Physician Assistants may be found at 263 CMR 5.04 and 263 CMR 5.08.

Become qualified to perform fluoroscopic procedures:
