Hepatitis C screening and treatment guidelines and recommendations

Learn about DPH guidelines and recommendations for hepatitis C (HCV) screening and treatment

Routine screening for Hepatitis C

Pursuant to M.G.L. c. 111, § 4M as amended by Section 138 of Chapter 165 of the Acts of 2014, primary care providers should offer hepatitis C testing to individuals born between 1945 and 1965. A Clinical Advisory (October 2014), provides practice guidelines to support screening along with background information about the impact of HCV in the Commonwealth, the basis for the current MDPH recommendation, and sources of additional information.

Individuals at risk for or living with hepatitis C infection may also be at risk for or living with HIV. Health care and public health professionals treating individuals at risk for or with hepatitis C infection are encouraged to become familiar with screening and treatment guidelines for HIV. Additional information and resources about HIV testing and treatment are available here.
