Senior Care Options (SCO) is a program that offers eligible Massachusetts residents a combined set of Medicaid and Medicare services. It began in 2004.

About the studies

These studies compare the experiences of seniors who enroll in the SCO program to those using traditional fee for service Medicare & Medicaid. The most recent study (2015) also analyzed mortality rates between SCO enrollees & traditional fee for service Medicaid & Medicare patients. Its findings include:

  • a 12% reduction in the number of NF residency months in the SCO enrollee population compared to a
  • a 17% reduction in the risk of death between those who enroll in SCO and those using fee for service Medicaid & Medicare

Senior Care Options evaluation phase 2: Report on interviews with members to learn about their experience

About the report

This report presents the findings of interviews conducted with 82 SCO enrollees in 3 languages (English, Spanish and Portuguese). Its goals were to:

  1. Evaluate the health care experience of SCO enrollees who are eligible for nursing homes 
  2. Compare the health care experiences of these SCO enrollees to enrollees in 2 other MA programs that serve similar people (the Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly and the elder Home and Community Based waiver program)
