Small claims courts provide a simple, informal and inexpensive option for resolving cases where the claim is $7,000 or less.
You may only bring a small claim in the court for the location where either the plaintiff or the defendant lives or has a place of business or employment. A small claim against a landlord over an apartment rental may also be brought where the apartment is located. You may find it easier to enforce a decision in your favor if you bring your small claim where the defendant lives or works, but you don’t have to.
The easiest way to file a small claim is to use Small Claims Guide and File.
This program will help you fill out the forms to file a small claim by providing questions you can answer in plain language. It won’t give you legal advice. Once you’ve completed the interview, the program will generate filled-in forms that you can electronically file in the proper court.
