SERV: State Employees Responding as Volunteers Program

It’s simple to volunteer and get hours credited for qualified service.

The State Employees Responding as Volunteers (SERV) Program is an employee benefit available to eligible Commonwealth executive department employees who have completed at least six months of state service in good standing. With prior supervisor approval, an employee may volunteer during their regular work schedule up to one day per month at an approved Massachusetts non-profit organization (7.5 or 8 hours/month; pro-rated for part-time employees), contingent upon supervisor approval and on agency operational needs.

What would you like to do?

Follow these simple steps to get involved and become a SERV volunteer.

  1. Refer to the list of approved non-profits to ensure you are eligible to volunteer at the organization. If you do not see the organization you are interested in, apply to add a non-profit organization to the approved SERV list. A member of the SERV team will connect with you to follow up on your request.
  2. Complete a SERV Request Form at least 30 days in advance and submit the form to your supervisor for approval.
  3. Have the non-profit organization sign the Verification Form once you volunteer. Give the completed form to your supervisor when you return to work.
