The impact of the long drought sixty years ago looms large today.  This crisis spurred changes in Quabbin and Wachusett Reservoirs watershed management. Forestry activities now create a resilient landscape. The watershed forest acts as a natural filter for clean drinking water.

MWRA and Drinking Water Infrastructure 

The MA Water Resources Authority (MWRA) invests billions of dollars to build new water treatment and transmission facilities and protect the watersheds. It also promotes water conservation. Daily water use is now 200 million gallons a day, well below the system’s safe yield of 300 million gallons.

Current Drought Status 

Ben Franklin said, “When the well is dry, we know the worth of water.” Water conservation is always important. Especially now as the state deals with two years of below average precipitation. Conserve water to ensure there is enough for people and the environment even when scarce.
