Overview
Who can get the rate?
You may qualify if:
- You are a residential customer of Eversource, National Grid, or Unitil; and
- You use a heat pump to heat your home.
A heat pump water heater does not qualify you for the rate unless the water heater also heats your home.
If you are already enrolled in a seasonal heat pump rate, you do not need to sign up again. You will automatically receive the updated winter rate starting November 1, 2026.
How does the seasonal heat pump rate work?
From November 1 through April 30, eligible customers pay lower distribution and transmission charges on their electric bill. The lower rates apply to all the electricity you use, not just the electricity used by your heat pump. From May to October, you will pay your regular residential or income-eligible electric rate.
For more information about regular residential electric rates, visit your electric company’s website:
The seasonal heat pump rates do not increase electric rates for non-heat pump households; non-heat pump households will not pay more for electricity in the winter because of the seasonal heat pump rate.
Automatic Enrollment
Eversource, National Grid, and Unitil automatically enroll customers in the seasonal heat pump rates who received or currently live at a home that received a qualifying heat pump rebate through Mass Save programs on or after January 1, 2019. If you were automatically enrolled, you do not need to do anything.
You will be charged less for electricity during the winter under the seasonal heat pump rates compared to regular rates. However, if you do not want the seasonal heat pump rate, contact your electric company:
If you think you qualify and you were not automatically enrolled, you can sign up directly with your electric company. This may be your situation if you:
- Did not receive a heat pump rebate through Mass Save; or
- Your heat pump was installed before January 1, 2019.
