Community Transit Grant Program
The Details
Overview
If you are looking to apply for an accessible vehicle, this page is for you! Through this program, MassDOT seeks to expand mobility for older adults and people with disabilities across the Commonwealth through filling gaps in the transportation network, complementing – not duplicating – existing services, and supporting coordinated models of transportation. The application opened September 25 and is due November 21. Contact Molly.A.Belanger@dot.state.ma.us for pre-application training materials.
If you are interested in applying for funding to operate transportation or promote mobility management to expand mobility for older adults, people with disabilities, and low-income people, please visit our page on applying for operating and mobility management grants instead.
Join our newsletter for updates on grant cycles.
Please note that Community Transit Grant Program vehicles are large, multi-passenger vans targeted to groups and shared rides. Regional transit authorities, municipalities (including Councils on Aging), non-profits, and private operators providing public transportation are eligible to apply. Individuals and families looking for accessible vehicles can refer to these resources.
How to apply
Steps:
- Contact Molly.A.Belanger@dot.state.ma.us for pre-application training materials.
- Review the vehicle guide to see what vehicles are available through the grant program.
- Review the application instructions for more details on how to apply. In particular, the appendix includes the questions that will be part of the application.
- Download the template forms (project narrative, active fleet inventory, and EV form). Fill out any that are required for your application. The project narrative is required for all applicants. The active fleet inventory is optional for Regional Transit Authorities and required for all other applicants. The EV form is only required if you are apply for one or more electric vehicles.
- Prepare any additional required uploads (for example, local match letter, sample lease, etc.). See the appendix of the application instructions for a full list of what is required.
- When ready, open the online form to begin your application. The online form has a series of questions about your organization, questions about each vehicle you are requesting, and then space for uploads. While you are answering the questions, you can scroll down and select "save for later" to save your work and get a URL that will allow you to return to your draft application. This URL will last for 30 days but will expire if you do not return within 30 days. Once you are ready to submit uploads, "save for later" is no longer available.
- Before submitting, make sure you see a green checkmark next to each of your uploads (not just the 100%).
- Applications are due November 21, but we always recommend submitting early. Reach out anytime if you have questions to us at Rachel.L.Fichtenbaum@dot.state.ma.us or (857) 368-8584.
