How to get a Verification Letter ID for myRMV

What is a a Verification Letter ID?
A Verification Letter ID is a one-time number assigned by the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) to customers who are completing RMV online transactions and need to log in to their myRMV profile. You will need a Verification Letter ID if:
- You do not have a myRMV profile set up OR
- You need to reset your myRMV multifactor authentication (MFA) method
MFA is a process by which a customer associates their email, phone number, or authenticator app to their online myRMV account.
A Verification Letter ID helps the RMV verify your identity and gives you access to your myRMV profile.
Fees
There is no fee for this transaction.
How to get
If you need to reset your myRMV security code, you can request a new Verification Letter ID online during the login process after verifying your identity.
- Once you’ve made a request to access your myRMV profile, we will mail a How to Access Your myRMV Profile letter, which contains the Verification Letter ID to your address on file within 7 business days.
- If you don’t want to wait to get your Verification Letter ID in the mail after requesting it online, you can ask for it to be printed at an RMV Service Center. This cannot be done at AAA locations.
If you have not received a How to Access Your myRMV Profile letter in the past, you'll be given one in person when you complete a transaction at an RMV Service Center.
How do I use my Verification Letter ID?
Online
1. Go to Mass.Gov/myRMV and select “Access My Profile”.
2. You’ll be taken to the MyMassGov login screen. Log in to MyMassGov if you already have an account. If you don’t, select “Create an Account” and follow the instructions.
- If you need help logging in to or creating a MyMassGov account, visit the MyMassGov Help Center.
3. You will be asked to share some information to locate or set up your myRMV account and verify your identity.
4. Next, complete the one-time step of entering your Letter ID. Note that your Letter ID is only valid for 60 days. You must request a new letter to be mailed after 60 days.
5. You can now access your myRMV profile to begin your transaction.
