The DCR Historic Landscape Stewardship group partners with staff across DCR to identify, evaluate, and plan for the protection and preservation of historic landscapes throughout the DCR system, while working to increase awareness about these rich resources. Building upon a legacy of historic landscape preservation led by DCR since the 1980s, the HLS group helps the agency prioritize resources through the identification, evaluation, and development of treatment strategies for historic landscapes.
Staff document and research historic landscapes; manage assessment, design, and construction projects for historic landscapes; and provide assistance in the development of interpretive elements to help communicate the significance of these resources. Staff also participate in and lead interdisciplinary teams to collaborate on efforts relating to park stewardship and historic landscape resources, including policy development, large-scale planning efforts, and ensuring consistency between the intersection of natural and cultural resources.
Outreach to communities and stakeholders, provision of technical assistance, and collaboration with internal and external groups through projects and programs like the DCR Stewardship Corps to foster the stewardship of our natural, cultural, and recreational resources through an historic landscape lens are the critical pieces that tie this all together.
