The observation requirement is designed to familiarize candidates with the courtroom environment, judicial procedures, interpreter roles and responsibilities, and the professional standards expected of court interpreters.
During the observation, candidates will gain firsthand exposure to courtroom operations, including interactions among judges, attorneys, court personnel, litigants, and interpreters. Participants will observe how interpreters apply the different modes of interpretation, maintain impartiality, adhere to the Code of Professional Responsibility, and facilitate meaningful language access during court proceedings.
The observation experience allows candidates to better understand courtroom protocol, legal terminology, and the pace and complexity of judicial proceedings before providing interpretation services. It also reinforces the ethical and professional expectations associated with court interpreting.
Completion of the required courtroom observation is a mandatory component of OLA’s interpreter credentialing process. Candidates must complete the observation in accordance with OLA guidelines and submit any required documentation verifying participation before advancing to the next stage of credentialing.
Requirements
This requirement must be satisfied by personally observing 20 hours of both interpreted and noninterpreted Massachusetts Superior Court, District Court, and Boston Municipal Court proceedings.
- Courtroom observation hours must be obtained by personally observing courtroom proceedings without actively participating in them, so that careful and directed attention is paid to the proceedings.
- Language-specific observation is not required. An applicant seeking a court interpreter designation can fulfill the requirement by observing proceedings interpreted in any language.
- Candidate must register for their observation hours schedule through the OLA prior to observing and must obtain a signature from the Regional Coordinator in the building.
