What is a tax intercept?
State and federal law allow DUA to take some or all of your state or federal tax refund if you don't repay overpayment debt. This is a tax intercept, sometimes also called a tax refund offset or reduced refund.
Next steps
If you owe DUA money due to an overpayment, you'll get an initial intercept notice in October. You have 60 days from the date of this notice to:
- Repay the debt
- Apply for an overpayment waiver
- Contest the debt (follow the instructions in the notice)
If you don't respond to the initial notice, you'll get another notice in January that your taxes will be intercepted.
Report fraud
If you believe someone has fraudulently received unemployment benefits with your information, report the fraud online or by phone at (877) 626-6800 (select option 5).
