Underground utility work

What is happening? 

  • Anticipated Monday, June 2, through the fall of 2025, the contractor is scheduled to continue underground utility work and drainage work on Sumner Avenue, Belmont Avenue, and Dickinson Street. Activities include asphalt removal, trenching, installing drainage infrastructure, and asphalt restoration.

Why is this work happening? 

  • This work is being performed in advance of roadway construction on Sumner Avenue, Dickinson Street, and Belmont Avenue.

When is this work happening? 

  • This work is anticipated to continue on weekdays through the fall of 2025.
  • Typical work hours are 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.
  • Pedestrian access, access to driveways, and emergency vehicle access will be maintained.
  • This schedule is subject to change in the event of inclement weather or unforeseen site conditions. 

How will this affect you? 

The following intermittent lane closures are anticipated:

  • On Sumner Avenue, between Main Greeting Road and Ormond Street.
  • On Belmont Avenue, between Burlington Street and Commonwealth Avenue 
  • On Dickinson Street, between Burlington Street and Cliftwood Street

Tree and Vegetation Removal

The contractor is scheduled to perform project tree and vegetation removal in the project limits. Activities include setting worksite traffic control and the controlled removal of project trees and vegetation. Tree and vegetation removals are scheduled to occur at the following locations:

  • On Sumner Avenue, between Continental Street and Daytona Street
  • On Belmont Avenue, between Beaumont Street and Ormond Street
  • On Dickinson Street, between Burlington Street and Cliftwood Street 
  • On local streets including Cliftwood Street, Commonwealth Avenue, Ormond Street, and Burlington Street.

Additional trees in the project limits will be protected in place with tree trunk armoring and pruning, in coordination with the project’s qualified Arborist and the City of Springfield’s Forestry Department.

This work is being performed in advance of project drainage, water line installation, and roadway reconstruction.

As part of the project landscaping at a later stage, a total of 118 trees are proposed to be planted, resulting in a gain of 57 trees within the project area. 

When is this Work Happening? 

  • This work is anticipated to start as early as Monday, April 21, 2025 and continue on weekdays through Friday, May 9, 2025.
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.
  • Pedestrian access and access to driveways will be maintained.
  • This schedule is subject to change in the event of inclement weather or unforeseen site conditions.

How Will this Affect You? 

The following impacts to traffic are anticipated. Intermittent lane closures are planned: 

  • On Sumner Avenue, between Main Greeting Road and Ormond Street
  • On Belmont Avenue, between Burlington Street and Commonwealth Avenue
  • On Dickinson Street, between Burlington Street and Cliftwood Street
  • On Cliftwood Street, Ormond Street, and Burlington Street.

Construction activities are anticipated to start in Spring 2025. Weather and unexpected circumstances make all construction activities subject to change without notice, but we will do our best to keep you updated. This page will be updated with the latest available construction information.

The City of Springfield and Fuss & O’Neill developed the project design from 2017-2023. The MassDOT Highway Division will oversee construction of the project. The project was awarded to Baltazar Contractors Inc. in December 2024 for construction.
