What you need to know

The project reconstructs The "X" intersection in Springfield, including improvements to Sumner Avenue and local intersections in the Forest Park neighborhood. Due to increased vehicular and pedestrian activity at the intersection, and the need for increased intersection safety, the project goals as developed by the City of Springfield and their design consultant Fuss & O’Neill include the following:

  • Increase Intersection Safety
  • Improve Congestion and Delay
  • Reduce Cut-Through Traffic
  • Upgrade Pedestrian Facilities (Walkways, Ramps, and Plazas)
  • Improve Cyclist Accommodations (Bike Lanes)
  • Replace and Improve Traffic Signals

The improvements have been developed with a Complete Streets approach, to provide a transportation network for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users. The project design balances safety, mobility, and access needs, while supporting quality of life for residents and a vibrant local economy.

The City of Springfield and Fuss & O’Neill developed the project design from 2017-2023. The MassDOT Highway Division will oversee construction of the project. The project was awarded to Baltazar Contractors Inc. in December 2024 for construction.
