CHICOPEE — A fire in a multifamily home claimed one person’s life and temporarily displaced seven others, said Chicopee Fire Chief Daniel Stamborski, Chicopee Police Chief Patrick Major, State Fire Marshal Jon Davine, and Hampden County District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni.

“Our hearts go out to the family that lost a loved one today,” said Chief Stamborski.

Firefighters responded to the five-unit dwelling at the corner of Artisan and Chicopee streets shortly before 4:00 this afternoon. On arrival, they learned that all but one occupant had escaped safely. Firefighters located that person, an adult, deceased during a search as they attacked the fire and fought to keep it from spreading.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of the person’s death and conduct a formal identification procedure.

The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation by the Chicopee Fire Department, Chicopee Police Department, State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and State Police assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s office. They are assisted by the Department of Fire Services’ Code Compliance & Enforcement Unit.

The Red Cross of Massachusetts is assisting the displaced residents.
