Refugee Youth Mentoring services provide orientation to refugee youth between the ages of 15-24 regarding how to access and navigate the mainstream service systems and local resources. They also allow for the development of organizational capacity to recruit, train, and maintain a volunteer corps to provide mentoring for refugee youth in order to support youth physical and mental well-being, employability, integration/acculturation, and financial literacy. Services are provided by community organizations within refugee communities so that the bilingual/bicultural staff can provide explanation to the client and follow-up with mentors and mainstream agencies, thus improving access to and understanding of mainstream services.
A Mentor Can:
- Help you to develop an individual goal plan
- Teach you about American culture – while preserving your unique heritage
- Provide low-stress situations for social interaction
- Practice English, math, and more
- Connect you with volunteer and community engagement opportunities
- Support you in job searching, resume writing, networking, and skill training
- Help you understand financial and health services
