The RMV issues two forms of ID for non-drivers, 1 of which is a Liquor ID for people 21 years of age and older who want to buy alcohol.

The Details

What you need

To apply for a Liquor ID:

  • You must be at least 21 years of age
  • You may not hold a valid Massachusetts driver's license

You must present:

  • A Social Security number (SSN) that the RMV can verify with the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) as having been issued to you OR an acceptable Denial Notice from the SSA. If you present a Denial Notice, you must also present proof of acceptable visa status, an I-94 (Record of Arrival and Departure), and a current non-U.S. Passport.
  • A document proving your date of birth
  • A document proving your signature
  • A complete application
  • The $25 fee

How to apply

Bring the completed application, along with all required identification documents and fee, to an RMV service center.

Most RMV service centers accept cash, check, money order, and credit or debit cards. Since payment methods vary by location, check what’s accepted at the site you will be visiting.

You will be given a temporary Massachusetts Liquor ID, valid for 30 days, at the service center, and a permanent Massachusetts Liquor ID will be mailed to you within 5–7 days.
