What you need

If you are renewing a Mass ID, you have the option of upgrading to a REAL ID. To upgrade, you will have to go to an RMV service center.

If you already have a REAL Mass ID or you want to renew your standard Mass ID, you can complete the process online. Limited-term driver’s license renewals require an in-person visit.

Beginning May 7, 2025, every air traveler aged 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, or another TSA-acceptable form of identification, for domestic air travel and to enter certain federal facilities.

A REAL ID in Massachusetts has a star in the top right corner. A standard Mass ID does not.

Note: IDs can be issued for less than 5 years, depending on the duration of an applicant’s lawful presence in the U.S. In these cases, the fee will be prorated, based on how long the license is valid and cost $5 a year
