Tax Filing Deadline Reminder

With just a few days left before the personal income tax deadline, we want to remind everyone that most returns and payments are due Tuesday, April 18, 2023, by midnight eastern standard time. The fastest and most secure way to file a return is to e-file. If you or your clients need an extension to file, a 6-month automatic extension could be available if payment requirements are met by April 18. The extension deadline is October 16, 2023.

Fillable Power of Attorney Form Now Available

-The Power of Attorney form, M-2848, is now fillable.  The DOR webpage POA and Third-Party Authorization has been updated with the new form. Additional changes include removal of the notary section and the inclusion of electronic signatures (when submitted via PDF email).

Test Your MassTaxConnect Credentials Before Due Dates

To make things smooth for paying online or conducting business on MassTaxConnect, business taxpayers and tax professionals should test their passwords and other MassTaxConnect login credentials in advance of major deadlines. For example, you may need a Notice of Account ID to create a username or password, or you may need to reset your password. It’s a great way to avoid phone queues on deadline day.

TY22 Filing Season by the Numbers

As we get closer to the finish line for income tax filing season, we’re looking at the numbers. To date, we’ve had just over 2.5 million returns filed and 1.7 million refunds. The Contact Center has taken approximately 99,000 calls.

Register if You’re a Short-Term Rental Operator or Intermediary

If you're offering short term rentals, a reminder for you. All operators must register with DOR and obtain a Certificate of Registration for each property they offer for rent. An intermediary or operator’s agent must register with DOR using MassTaxConnect. If already registered with MassTaxConnect, no need to re-register. Visit the Room Occupancy Excise Tax page to learn more and watch our registration video.

Boat Season is Near

By the looks of this week’s weather forecast, summer is approaching. Boat owners can file and pay sales tax through MassTaxConnect under “File” on the homepage or use the QR code to get directly to the form. Don’t forget to print out a receipt as proof for the Environmental police. You can access the information later on MassTaxConnect through “Quick Links” by choosing “Find a Submission” and following the prompts. More information can be found on the website.

Come See Us!

Tomorrow, April 13, we’re teaming up with our IRS partners and Greater Boston Legal Service’s Low Income Tax Clinic for another Tax Problem Solving Day. We will be at the West Roxbury Branch Library at 1961 Centre St. from 12:00pm to 4:30pm. See you there.
