Massachusetts uses building energy codes to make residential, commercial and other types of buildings healthier and more energy-efficient. Building energy codes set standards for insulation, heating, cooling, lighting, and other building design elements that impact energy use and efficiency. They are intended to reduce energy costs, cut greenhouse gas emissions and support decarbonization of Massachusetts' building sector.
As part of the Green Communities Act of 2008, Stretch code adoption is required to become a designated Green Community and to qualify for Green Community Competitive Grants.
As part of the Act creating a Next-Generation Roadmap for Massachusetts Climate Policy of 2021, Specialized code adoption is required to become a Climate Leader Community and to qualify for Climate Leader Accelerator or Technical Assistance Grants.
