With over 250 miles of parkways across our system, DCR is committed to ensuring that our roadways are as safe and accessible as possible for all travelers. We are actively working to introduce protective measures along Memorial Drive from Magazine Street to Audrey Street via the BU Bridge rotary to accommodate more than $1.5 million in safety upgrades for pedestrians and cyclists.
Safety and Accessibility Improvements
DCR’s Division of Design and Engineering currently has a range of planned safety and accessibility improvements for this area. In the short-term, these improvements consist of:
- Widening of the sidewalks leading to the BU rotary to provide a 10-12-feet-wide raised shared-use path for a total of approximately 1200 linear feet on the river side of Memorial Drive.
- Improving and reconfiguring wheelchair ramps and median islands at the intersection of Memorial Drive and the BU Bridge.
- Replacing nearly 700 linear feet of existing Boston Pattern Fence.
- Restriping the crosswalks to include the green paint for the bike crossings.
- Implementing a speed limit reduction to 25 mph along the BU Bridge corridor
DCR has been working over the last year to design these improvements and work is slated to begin on these short-term improvements on Monday, October 7, 2024.
In the long-term, DCR is working with MassDOT on the Reid Overpass project that will redesign the intersection of Memorial Drive and the BU Bridge. This project also involves the installation of new signal equipment.

Project Updates
November 2024
Substantial project completion is scheduled for the week of December 9. Following substantial project completion, the takedown of the transportation management plan will begin, with expected completion the week of December 23. Temporary chain link fencing will be utilized in areas along the shared-use path with missing fencing. In the Spring of 2025, Boston pattern fencing will be installed to replace the chain-link and existing fencing along the shared-use path within the project corridor's limit of work. Please be aware that this schedule may change due to weather conditions or other unforeseen construction factors.
