The Decarbonizing the Peak Focus Area Work Group will identify and demonstrate pathways to reduce reliance on and eliminate fossil fuels and associated emissions from peaking power plants and CHP facilities, both via demand- and supply-side alternatives.
Overview
Peaking power plants are facilities that typically run only when there is very high demand for electricity, i.e., when demand “peaks.” In Massachusetts today there are dozens of fossil fuel-fired power plants. Most of these plants are either peaking power plants or combined heat and power (CHP) facilities, with many located in or near environmental justice communities. As Massachusetts transitions to an electrified energy and transportation system powered by renewables, there is a potential to become more reliant, not less, on these facilities.
