Retail Heating Oil and Propane Prices - Dashboard

As part of U.S. EIA State Heating Oil & Propane Program (SHOPP), Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources conducts weekly telephone surveys of heating oil and propane dealers through the winter heating season (October - March), and posts the average retail price. During the shoulder season (April - September), DOER conducts these surveys on a monthly basis. The interactive dashboard below allows users to explore current and historical price data previously posted in static tables.

Prices shown are aggregated from DOER's telephone surveys of full-service heating oil and propane dealers serving Massachusetts households. These prices are not inclusive of any discounts offered for cash payments and are based on the average winter delivery of 100-150 gallons or more per fill-up.

Note: dealers may charge more per gallon for fill-ups under 100 gallons. Prices are in $ per gallon.

Electric & Natural Gas Rates

Unlike heating oil and propane, electric and gas rates are set by utilities and approved by the Mass. Dept of Public Utilities (DPU). Customers of investor-owned (non-municipal) electric distribution companies can choose to purchase the generation (supply) portion of their electricity from a competitive supplier through a program known as Competitive Supply, or choose to stay with their utility's Basic Service rates, which are approved by the DPU and published semi-annually. Natural gas customers receive service from their local utility, with rates that are adjusted seasonally (winter and summer).
