Who can apply
Massachusetts employers in good standing who are covered by the Workers' Compensation Act (MGL c. 152) are eligible.
How the grant works
- Apply online by submitting your training proposal to the Department of Industrial Accidents (DIA) Office of Safety during the application period.
- Receive a decision from the DIA Office of safety.
- If approved, sign your contract and complete the training with an approved provider.
- Submit your training costs for reimbursement after the training is complete.
The SafetyWorks Training Grant is a reimbursement program. Training must be approved and completed after your contract is signed to be eligible for funding. Reimbursement cannot exceed the approved grant amount.

- Applications open: June 1, 2026
- Applications close: June 30, 2026
- Training period: July 1, 2026 - June 30, 2027
- Invoice deadline: July 15, 2027

Eligible training topics
The grant supports in-person, hands-on safety training, including:
- Emergency response & first aid
- Workplace violence prevention & de-escalation
- Fire, electrical & hazard safety
- Fall protection & working at heights
- Equipment operation & material handling
- Hazardous materials & environmental safety
- Confined space & rescue
- job-specific safety training
- Regulatory and certification training
Have a different safety training in mind? You can propose additional topics for approval.
Training requirements
Training must:
- Be live and in person (no online courses)
- be provided by a Massachusetts-based, licensed trainer
- Focus on improving workplace safety and health
The grant does not cover:
- Training completed before contractual approval
- Online or self-paced courses
- Payroll, stipends, or travel costs
- Administrative or overhead expenses
- Previously funded training topics
- Certain public sector employees (e.g., police, firefighters, federal workers)
